Connotations

PURITY

This image connotes purity. To show purity we placed a bottle of water down on the grass and used a straight on angle, as both water and grass are both pure. We had the water bottle the main focus of the shot because we wanted to show that water is the most pure substance of all. It would have been better if we did not have the building in the background as it will give the shot a more naturalistic look. Here is what it could of looked like:

FEAR

In this photo we see a boy trapped in a corner, curled up into a ball. Because the boy is curled up into a ball we can clearly see that this photo connotes fear, the shadow gives that extra feeling of fear as it gives the impression that it is scaring him. A high angle was used to show that the subject of the photo is weak and cannot do anything against the towering shadow.

STRENGTH

This image connotes strength. In this shot we used a low angle, because the photo is looking up at him, it will also show his power as well as his strength. His facial expression also shows his strength as it looks as if he is struggling, which even further connotes strength. In the picture, we used a close up shot. Towards the top of the photo, it is quite blurry, this shows the movement of his arm, trying to show that he is lifting weights.

DESIRE

In this photo we see someone pressed up against a snack vending machine. For this picture we also used a close up shot with an eye level angle. This picture connotes desire because he is pressed up against the machine, looking as if he wants everything inside. He is smiling in this photo, further showing his desire for the items inside the vending machine.

LONELINESS

This image connotes loneliness. In the photo we used a high angle to show that he is inferior. In doing so, it shows that he is lonely. The use of the shadows give the whole image a gloomy effect and feel, which also connotes loneliness. As he has his hood up, it shows that he wants to be excluded for everyone else and be in his own world, again connoting that sense of loneliness.

  1. SOme good points here Luca and you generally use the terminology correctly. You could perhaps have talked more clearly about the connotations of the building in the 'purity' shot as detracting from the 'nature' connotations, but overall this is a good start.
