Research & Planning - Music Videos.
Choose you track:
The song I have chosen for the music videos assignment is 'Something Just Like This' by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay.
Analysing the track:
Clothing/Costumes: Although they are animated, you can see that they have stuck with the animal theme, and it shows that paradise was not the first time they have been animals in their music videos.
Make Up: Yet again you unable to see any or even get a slight hint that there may be some used because this music video is completely CGI animated.
Tone of existing videos: In this music video there electronic elements involved, similar to my selected song, and paradise. They all have this in common, they all have some kind of electronic music involved in their music.
Locations in Existing Videos: Once again the locations are unique to the video, of course the video is animated but Coldplay have not used a forest in their music videos anywhere before.
Concepts/Narratives: There are not many concepts involved with the music video or even any narratives. It is simply Coldplay, animated as chimpanzees dancing in the forest with others.
The song I have chosen for the music videos assignment is 'Something Just Like This' by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay.
Analysing the track:
Meaning/Concept/Content: The meaning of the song is to always accept who you are, despite having any flaws or set backs. The song itself is about a relationship that does not have to be super humanly perfect.
Imagery: Judging by the lyrics, you can tell that someone thinks they are not good enough for their significant other. And that he is trying to compare himself so superheroes.
Narrative: There is not really a narrative to this song, as there is no official music video, it is difficult to say if it has a narrative or not.
Genre/Style: The genre and style of this song is Dance/Electronic.
Pace: It is quite an upbeat song, it is not too fast and it is not too slow either.
Duration: The song lasts 4:08.
Clothing/Costumes: During the whole music video, the band member use elephant costumes. There is only one part where you see the lead singer remove the mask, but he swiftly puts it back on.
Make Up: None used as they have masks on, you are not able to see that they have make up on.
Tone of existing videos: Coldplay's tone is very similar throughout their music and their music videos. A lot of their videos have them dressed in silly costumes like this, or even animated into creatures.
Locations in existing videos: The locations used in this video are unique and cannot be seen anywhere else in any of Coldplay's other music videos.
Concepts/Narratives: The narrative of this music video is that he is supposed to be an elephant and he is lost without his band members. He looks all over the place to try and find them.

Style, Conventions and Techniques of the music video.
In-concert and 'as live' footage:
In-concert footage is fairly self explanatory, it is when a music video shows a band or an artist playing in front of a live audience, as if they are playing their music live. For my first example, I will be using Coldplay's 'Sky full of stars'. This is a perfect example of in-concert music video, they are walking down the street playing the song to which they eventually reach a stage and play in front of the live audience.
Narrative and Interpretive:
Some artists will create music videos that have a narrative to it, some kind of story. Or their music videos will interpret the lyrics of the song. These can be done in many different ways. Narrative videos will usually have a story for people to watch and follow. Sometimes they video will be a literal representation of the lyrics, but other times there may be a story shown, but has nothing to do with the lyrics. A good example of a Narrative video would be Michael Jackson's 'The way you make me feel'. In this video, Michael is trying to get this girl he loves to pretty much love him back, he expresses the way he feels in the lyrics and they are translated and shown through the video.
Surrealist/Absurdist:
A surrealist or an absurdist is someone who makes random or out of the ordinary looking music videos, they will usually not have anything to do with the lyrics or the song what so ever. An example of this would be a song called 'Wombass' by Tiesto and Oliver Heldens. This is a instrumental song, there is no lyrics. Although the video is random as there is no context as to what is happening, and there is a guy who is just dancing everywhere he goes.
Impressionist:
An impressionist is an artist who will try to capture the emotional side of the music rather than the actual meaning of the song. In this case, that makes these kind of music videos more artistic. An example of an impressionist would be Adele's 'Hello'. In this video, she looks as if she is singing with emotion and is looking to be sad throughout most of the video.
Intertextual: Parody and pastiche:
There are many different styles of intertextual music videos. Parody music videos are when the artist makes fun out of a certain topic or a particular person and will usually turn a serious situation into something comical. A pastiche is when an artist will imitate another artists style and try to make it comical as well. A perfect example for a parody music video would be Weird Al Yankovic's 'White & Nerdy'. This is a parody of the song 'Riding Dirty' by Chamillionaire.
An example of a pastiche music video would be eminem's 'Without me'. In this music video he makes fun of lots of different american TV shows. He also makes fun of Elvis and other people who are known worldwide. And finally, he imitates the style of superheroes and the whole comic book style in his video.
Animation:
Animated music videos are fairly easy to explain, they are simply videos that can either be entirely animated, or could sometimes have parts of the music video animated. Animated music videos will most of the time be lyric videos but there are a handful of different animated music videos out there that are very well animated, for example: Coldplay's song 'Adventure of a lifetime' is completely animated and is all created using CGI. The 4 apes are supposed to represent the members of Coldplay.
Here is an example of a partially animated music video, the animations in the video are the lyrics to the song and appear along side the actors within the film. The song is called 'Fast Lane' and it is by Bad Meets Evil ft. Eminem.
Lip-Sync:
A lip sync video is when the artist would be required to mime the words of their song to make it look like they are synced up to the music track. Lip syncing can also be used in more narrative based music videos. A good example of a lip sync video would be Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky'. In this video Pharrell Williams looks like he is singing, but is just miming to make it look like he is in sync with the track.
Editing:
There are a lot of different music videos with a lot of editing included and also very minimal editing involved. Some of the heavily edited music videos would have a lot of special effects and cuts etc. Meanwhile minimal edited music videos usually are shot in either one take or there are not very many cuts at all. For example: for the heavily edited music videos, a good example for this is 'Love the Way you Lie' by Eminem ft. Rihanna. This is a good example because there is a lot of fire in the video as well as a lot of cuts.
A good example of a music video with very minimal editing is 'Ain't No Rest For The Wicked' Vintage Jazz Cover. This music video has no editing at all, it is done all in one take and there is no cuts or camera movements throughout the whole video.
Cutting to the beat:
Cutting to the beat means that a music video is edited in such a way that every time there is a cut in the video, you will hear a beat of the music change also. Or it could be when someone or something in the music video moves to the beat of the song as well. An example of this is 'Don't' by Ed Sheeran. This music video has a man dancing throughout the whole music video, but at the end when he is dancing in the house, his dancing matches to the beat.
Post-Production effects.
A lot of music videos will have a lot of post production effects. There are lots of reasons as to why people may want a lot of post production effects in their music video, for example, they may want to enchant or impress their audience into watching their content, this is because if they enjoy all the special and visual effects, they are likely to watch more. A great example for this is Eminem's 'We made you'. This music video includes lots of special and visual post production effects.
Split Screen:
In music videos, there are many different editing techniques, one of which is the use of split screen. This is when multiple images are shown on the screen a the same time. Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' is a good example of this as midway through the song there is a part in which you see him dancing across 3 different screens at once.
Chroma Key:
Another form of editing technique is the use of chroma key. Chroma key is when someone stands in front of a green screen and most of their music video is filmed in front of a green screen. Michael Jackson's 'Leave me alone' is a good example for this as you can clearly tell that chroma key and green screening was used during the making of this music video.
Camera Movements:
Using lots of different types of camera movements can show movement in music videos. With this, it can create flow and excitement for any one who watches. A good example of this is Drake's 'God's Plan'. In the music video it looks like it is being filmed by a cheap camera, and the screen is constantly moving. This is because his budget that was needed for the making of the video was given away to people who needed it more.
Camera Angles & Shot Types:
By using lots of various shot lengths and angles in a music video, an artist can create tone and some kind of meaning within their music video. With having shot variation, you can also show some elements of mise-en-scene. Post Malone's 'Rockstar'. In the music video you can see a lot of different camera angles and shot types, there are a lot of close us, longs shots and medium shots, and they are always constantly changing.
Mise-en-scene:
Mise-en-scene is all about what is seen in a video. In music videos there is a lot of objects, lighting, and a lot of scenery, these are all to reinforce the mood or atmosphere of a music video. Depending on what mise-en-scene you have in a music video will determine how the mood and atmosphere is shown throughout the video. Sometimes only a small amount of mise-en-scene is needed to portray a large message. For example, Bruno Mars's 'Grenade' has him tugging a piano all the way through a city to the person he loves only to find out she cheated on him. This and the lyrics show he would still do anything for her, even go through the pain of pulling heavy things such as that.
In-concert footage is fairly self explanatory, it is when a music video shows a band or an artist playing in front of a live audience, as if they are playing their music live. For my first example, I will be using Coldplay's 'Sky full of stars'. Single Camera Shorts - Production meetings.
Production meeting 1 (20/02/18) - In today's lesson we chose the script that we wanted to film (The College - Speech Day). And then we looked through my script and made changes to how we saw fit and also added notes to suggest improvements.
Production meeting 2 (21/02/18) - This lesson I continued to make changes and tweaks to the script and eventually got it complete. Dan worked on all of the talent releases and filled them all in. And Nic worked on the risk assessment and has completely finished that as well. Next lesson we will work on story boards.
Production meeting 3 (23/02/18) - Today we printed out the talent releases and have cast the roles of our film. I am starting on the story boards and also starting on the shot list next lesson.
Production meeting 4 (27/02/18) - I started on the shot list for my section of scenes. I should be able to get it done next lesson.
Production meeting 5 (06/03/18) - I have completed the shot list, Next lesson I am going to be starting the story board and going to do a location recce and try to get permissions.
Production meeting 6 (07/03/18) - Today I have started on my section of the story boards. I have also gone around the college and did a location recce, and took photos of the different locations.
09 - Today I have nearly finished all of my story boards and have implemented a tiny little feature into our film, which will make it look really good.
13/03/18 - Today I have almost completed my pre production, just have to complete one more piece and I am done.
14/03/18 - This lesson we had a really cap on how to use cameras effectivelying. And we also started on the prop lists and production schedule
27/04/18 - Today we started to edit more of the film. I was originally worried because one of our actors has exams and we almost ran out of time to film all of her scenes. But we pulled through and managed to film everything we could with the time we had. We still have a little left to film.

Single Camera Techniques - Essay.
In this essay, I am going to be addressing and explaining various points and key terms that are all to do with single camera productions. These points I will be explaining are the following: Camera, Lighting, Sound, Editing, Single camera genre and formats and Multi-camera techniques. Single Camera productions are motion picture films and TV that are filmed with only one camera. Throughout this essay I will also be comparing the differences between multi-camera and single camera films. Multi-camera films are when something is filmed with more than one camera, there will usually be three.
Camera:
Single Camera productions are filmed using 1 camera, and 1 camera only. Most films you see nowadays are all filmed with 1 camera. Apart for when there are action scenes. Many scenes in Marvel films are action packed and these tend to be filmed with multiple cameras. For example, In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, there is a scene where they are fighting over the key to Davy Jones' chest. This would have been filmed with multiple cameras. However, the rest of the film would be filmed with a single camera.
The reason for this is so they can film a lot of the action within a few takes and not have to re do anything over and over. Single cameras are used a lot more however because it would be cheaper for the film company to do. Using only 1 camera would mean that you can get involved a lot more within the scene and allows you to get a lot of varying shots that you wouldn't normally be able to get. In contrast, multi camera productions are static meaning you can only get shots of one side of the set. For example chat shows are multi camera, that also means they do not have to do many re takes as they can film it all in one.
Lighting:
In Single camera productions, lighting is very important. It can be changed in many different ways to suit the directors needs. It is a lot easier to do this in single camera productions because there is only 1 camera being used, this means that there can be more lighting equipment set up on and around on the set of the film. This also means that the camera is less likely to accidentally film any lighting equipment. If this were to be multi-camera, there would have to be a lot less ass having 3 cameras means you are more likely to film unwanted equipment. An example of good lighting would be lighting in horror films. Lighting in a single camera production is better because they can have light on specific objects or characters. However on a multi camera production, you can only film the lighting from specific angles because other wise you would be able to see the lights in the set.
Sound:
Sound being used in single camera productions is usually recorded with a boom mic. The boom mic will be controlled by someone known as the boom guy. Their job is hang a large microphone above the actors when they are filming so their voices can be picked up. Because most films are single camera productions, it is much harder to record the sound as the microphone cannot be seen on set. Where as if you were filming a multi-camera production, such as the BBC news, the microphones can be seen, usually clipped to one's shirt.
Editing:
Editing is a lot easier to do during multi-camera productions. For example: during live shows there will be more than one camera filming, this allows the team to cut from camera to camera smoothly and without any problems. This is the same for news channels too. Another thing is that the cameras during news programs and live shows are seen a lot of the time and this is not a problem. However during a single camera production. There mustn't be any equipment seen on set. A lot of films in this day and age have a lot of CGI involved in post production. It makes things harder for the editors if any CGI scenes are filmed with a single camera because all the footage is on one camera and they have to search through everything to put pieces of continuity of the film in the correct place. Here is an example of a film with heavy CGI.
Single Camera Genre and Formats:
There are a lot of genres that would be difficult for multi-camera productions to do, but at the same time, there a lot of genres that single camera productions are not able to do either. TV programmes such as TV soaps are perfect for multi-camera productions, because they usually have a lot of tension involved and cutting to different shots quickly is a good way to create tension. Single camera productions would not be very good for filming TV soaps. Single camera productions are good at making dramas and horrors, because of the atmosphere they create, using a single camera would be perfect for these.
Camera:
Single Camera productions are filmed using 1 camera, and 1 camera only. Most films you see nowadays are all filmed with 1 camera. Apart for when there are action scenes. Purpose of the music video - 1000 word essay
Music has been around for a very long time, however music
videos have only been around for a little amount of time. The first music video
was produced and released in 1975. Queen made their song Bohemian Rhapsody.
Throughout the years music videos have developed greatly. Music videos are
important because they make people remember the song. For example: when someone
sees something that is in the video and it reminds them of the song. In this
essay I am going to be talking about the importance and purpose of music
videos, and writing about my understanding of the functions of music videos.
One of the main reasons why music videos are popular is because they have great promotion value, both for the artists and their song, but also for the directors as well. In a lot of music videos you will usually see the director’s names either at the start of the music video or at the end of the music video. A form of promotion that artists/bands do in their music videos is put the name of their band somewhere within the music video. For example: The Beatles have their band name all over their music video. The band name is on the drums. Directors can also be promoted by their certain styles, Michel Gondry is famous for many different music videos, like Daft Punk’s Around the World. In this video, each group of dancers are dancing in time to a different instrument or beat in the song.
Producers of music videos have many different ways and strategies on how they market the artists/bands. Each of Michel Gondry's style of music videos are known for being very strange and unique. This is clearly shown in this video.
A way that producers market the artists and bands is what appears in their music videos. For example, there are many music videos that have a lack of clothing, lots of sexualisation and alcohol. These type of videos come from very major label bands and artists. Independent bands and artists don’t always have the money/funding to make such large scale videos, so they usually result to making videos that attract attention because of something really cool they may have done in their video. Self-produced artists and bands will usually try to start their careers on YouTube or Facebook or any other social media websites. Artists such as Justin Bieber started his music career on Facebook. And Poppy started her music career by showing off her artistic side on YouTube. Finally, many artists and bands also make artistic music videos because they want to be remembered by a visual masterpiece. Daft Punk released an album called Discovery, this in my opinion is artistic because every music video is completely animated. Here are a few pros and cons of being a self-produced artists. A few of the pros include: you get to keep any rights and royalties to your music that you create. All money that you make will all be sent to you and no one else will take a share of it. And a couple of cons include: you may not have any contacts so it may be difficult to get your music out into the world and to also get yourself signed to a label. It is also a full time job so you have to be prepared to dedicate most of your time towards it.
Every time an artist’s or band’s record is played on TV, radio or anywhere else people are able to watch it, they should receive royalties or some form of payment. They will usually get payed so that the publishers can have access to their songs and so they will be allowed to put these videos and song on the internet and TV.
In the past it was very easy for band/artists to get record label income and money for their tracks as whenever you purchase a CD or a record vinyl for example, the money would go to them directly. But because of how everything has changed, directors, producers, anyone involved with a certain video, has to get a slight cut of the money, meaning the band/artist does not get all that they should.
The extension of media outlets throughout the years has changed drastically. YouTube is probably the most popular media outlets to promote bands and artist's music videos. There are also music outlets like TV shows such as Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor. The girl group Little Mix and the singer Olly Murs both made it to the semi finals of The X factor. They did not win the competition, but they did go on to become very famous. There have been a lot of different people who have become famous for singing on YouTube. Sean Mendez is a good example. He started off by doing covers of songs. Then he started to be noticed by lots of people and eventually he has become a very famous singer.
Synergy is a big part of the media industry. Synergy means promoting certain brand through licencing deals, by this I mean that large companies will contact others in hopes that they can promote their products in many different ways. A lot of these ways include through music videos. For example: Avril Lavigne did a song called 'Rock and Roll' for Sony in which they promoted their new phone the Sony Xperia. There is a scene in which the phone is submerged in water to show how the phone is completely waterproof.
In conclusion, I think that music videos are so popular because it gives the band/artist that promotion value. They make them well known to the world and many people watch their videos because they will be posted on the internet. Another reason is that they are very memorable, so if someone sees something that could potentially relate to the video they have just watched, they could also go tell friends about it etc.

The History of Music Videos.
Music videos originally began in 1975. Bohemian Rhapsody which was released by Queen, was considered to be a 'ground breaking' video which started an era of modern music videos. The video had minimal editing, and the video consists of Queen playing their instruments for 5 minutes.
The next so called 'ground breaking' video came from David Bowie in 1980 with his song called Ashes to Ashes. This music video is set in what looks to be in the future or even on another planet, with many different colours and lively actors all in the mix.
4 years later in 1984, Laura Branigan's video for her song Self Control had been refused airplay by MTV. This was because the music video was too explicit/sexual for TV at the time.
Shortly after, Michael Jackson's Thriller is released and it changes how music videos are seen forever. This video goes on for 13 minutes and is considered a short film.
Skipping to 1995, Michael Jackson did a duet with his sister, Janet Jackson. They released their song Scream, and this was the most expensive music video ever made.
In 2010 Lady Gaga's music videos reached 1 billion views in total. Her song Poker Face had reached 375 million views on YouTube alone.
In 2015 YouTube turns 10 and around 300 hours of video content is posted on the website every minute. And YouTube also becomes music video friendly.
